JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the counseling process through which students get admission into several top engineering colleges in India, including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. JoSAA conducts this process in order to streamline seat allocation in accordance with the ranks acquired by candidates in the entrance exams, JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
Important Steps in the Counseling Process of JoSAA:
Registration: All those candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria for any of JEE Main and JEE Advanced are required to register themselves through the official website. Only after that can they apply for the seat allocation process.
Choice Filling and Locking: Candidates can opt for their preferred institutions and engineering branches during registration. One can fill as many choices as they want. Choices have to be locked before the deadline given.
Seat Allotment Rounds: JoSAA conducts a number of seat allotment rounds on factors such as the rank and category of the candidate along with seat availability. After each round, the candidate can accept the seat or select options that include float – higher preference in the following rounds- or slide, which also considers higher preference within the same institution.
Document Verification and Reporting: After accepting a seat, a candidate would have to visit the center for reporting of the assigned seat for verification of their documents. It ensures all the details are correct along with the candidate’s genuineness of eligibility.
Seat Acceptance Fee Payment: Candidates would need to make the seat acceptance fee if they wish to confirm an allotment. After their document verification is completed, they must report to the institute to which they are allotted by the due date to confirm their admission.
Important Points to Note:
Eligibility: Those candidates who qualify in JEE Main for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs and qualify in JEE Advanced for IITs are eligible for participation in JoSAA counseling.
Number of Rounds: In general, JoSAA has six to seven rounds of counseling depending on the availability of seats and demand.
Withdrawal Option: JoSAA also offers a withdrawal option so that candidates can choose some other opportunity if they wish.
The counseling procedure of JoSAA integrates admissions so that a single integrated portal offers seat allocation across all technical institutes in India, given the guarantee of transparency and merit-based admission.
