The Indian women’s hockey team evidenced great determination and skill in a thrill ride to gain qualification into the final of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy with a 2-0 victory over Japan. Awaiting the final ticket on November 20, 2024 for a date with China, the charge was led by Salima Tete-a rising star from the small village of Badkichapar of Simdega, Jharkhand.
Salima’s journey to the international arena is a story of resilience, dedication, and the unwavering support of her family. Born into a farming family, hockey was played by Salima on muddy grounds with a wooden stick; this humble beginning molded her passion for the game. In fact, her father, a former hockey player himself, had introduced her to hockey at a very young age. He had managed to save from his poor financial conditions enough money to buy her first hockey stick, an act that sparked his dreams.
“We had a mud ground where we played barefoot,” Salima recalled in an interview. “Before practice, we would clear the ground of stones to make it smooth. My parents, despite their struggles, have always supported me. I will never forget the sacrifices they made for me to pursue my dreams.”
Salima’s success can be attributed to her effort as well as the never-giving-up attitude of her family. She has become a key player in India’s women’s hockey team due to her tenacity and talent.
With a resounding chorus of national cheers going into the final bout against China, Salima Tete’s story will continue inspiring thousands of young athletes across the country. With determination and the right type of support, even the most modest beginnings can lead to greatness.
All eyes are now on Salima and Indian Team, who are eager to take the title of Asian Champions Trophy home for them, marking their names in the history of hockey.
