Ravichandran Ashwin, one of the great Indian off-spinners, declared his international retirement on December 18, 2024. He is leaving the field after an illustrious career of over 14 years.
Career Highlights
Ashwin’s international career began in 2010 with his ODI debut and then the Test debut in 2011. He took 537 wickets in more than 106 Test matches, which makes him India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, behind only Anil Kumble. In ODIs, he took 156 wickets in 116 matches, and in 65 T20 Internationals, he took 72 wickets.
Beyond his bowling prowess, Ashwin was a competent batsman, achieving six Test centuries and contributing significantly to India’s lower-order resilience.
Retirement Announcement
Ashwin’s retirement came immediately after the third Test against Australia concluded in a draw at the Gabba in Brisbane. While addressing the media on the occasion of the presser along with the Indian cricket team’s skipper, Rohit Sharma, Ashwin spoke with gratitude on his team mates, Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI and Australian team which provided them a fighting opportunity against their adversary. Ashwin went on stating that he wishes to further his club-level cricket since he had many more international-level contributions up his sleeves.
