Maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijay Singhji Jadeja, the ruler of Nawanagar-now Jamnagar, Gujarat-is famous for his extraordinary compassion and humanitarian efforts during World War II. His efforts received great respect not only in India but also abroad, especially in Poland.
Main Contributions:
1. Taking Refuge of Polish Children:
There were countless Polish citizens who were displaced during the World War II. Among them were orphaned children, who after being deported to Siberia found their conditions getting dire.
Maharaja Digvijay Singhji welcomed nearly 1,000 such children, established a camp for them at Balachadi near Jamnagar.
He ensured that they had food, shelter, education, and a safe environment, treating them like his own family.
2. International Fame:
He was celebrated everywhere across the globe for his efforts towards protecting and nurturing the young Polish children. In Poland, he is known as the “father” and often called “Bapu.”
In Warsaw, there is a school that has been named after him, signifying his crucial role in saving lives at the point in time.
In 2016, the Polish government conferred upon him posthumously the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland as a gesture towards his humanity.
3. Visionary Leadership:
Beyond his humanitarian act, Maharaja was a forward-looking ruler who did work for the growth and well-being of his people of Nawanagar.
