Perhaps one of the most widely published stories online is the account of Lawrence Anthony and the elephants, which, in what is supposedly a 12-hour walk, paid their respects; however, these elements are true, while the entire story combines fact with exaggeration.
Lawrence Anthony was a South African conservationist who made a name for himself in dedicating himself towards animals and the work that he did rescuing and rehabilitating elephants. Two herds of elephants stopped appearing as they had begun after Lawrence’s death in 2012, when they gathered near his home on the Thula Thula Reserve, as if paying their respects to Lawrence. Some sources describe the elephants journeying a long way to Anthony’s home.
Anthony was indeed famous for his relationship with these elephants and his efforts to save animals in war zones. However, no verified documentation confirms the fact that the elephants really marched for 12 hours or traveled long distances only to celebrate him. The account speaks of the good relationship between Anthony and the elephants, but the details could be rather poetic than factual.
