New Delhi, August 15, 2025 — On the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the iconic Red Fort, delivering a record-breaking 103-minute speech that laid out an ambitious roadmap for India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation by 2047.
The speech, Modi’s 12th consecutive Independence Day address, surpassed his previous record of 98 minutes and centered around the theme of “Naya Bharat” (New India), focusing on self-reliance, national security, and economic reforms.
Strong Stance on National Security
Modi announced the launch of “Mission Sudarshan Chakra”, a defense initiative inspired by Lord Krishna’s mythical weapon. The mission aims to strengthen India’s security infrastructure by 2035, including the development of an indigenous defense system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome.
“This system will not only counter attacks but also strike back at those who threaten our sovereignty,” said Modi.
He also praised the success of “Operation Sindoor”, a military strike against terrorist infrastructure following the April 22 Pahalgam attack. Modi saluted the armed forces for their decisive action, stating that India will not tolerate terrorism.
In a firm message to adversaries, Modi warned against nuclear blackmail and addressed the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it “unjust” and vowing to prioritize India’s water rights for farmers.
Economic Reforms and Job Creation
Key economic announcements included next-generation GST reforms to be unveiled by Diwali 2025, aimed at reducing taxes on essential goods and supporting MSMEs.
Modi also launched the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, a ₹1 lakh crore employment scheme targeting 3.5 crore jobs over the next two years. Under this program, young individuals securing their first private-sector job will receive ₹15,000 monthly support.
“This will be a Diwali gift to the nation, making essentials more affordable and boosting our economy,” Modi stated.
Technological and Energy Advancements
Modi announced that Made-in-India semiconductor chips will enter the market by the end of 2025, backed by six new manufacturing units.
On energy, he revealed plans to increase nuclear capacity tenfold by 2047, with 10 reactors already in development. The government will also expand solar and hydropower projects to ensure energy independence.
Addressing Demographic Challenges
A high-powered demography mission will address illegal migration and demographic imbalances in border areas. Modi emphasized the importance of safeguarding unity and protecting citizens’ rights.
Tributes and Reflections
The Prime Minister began his address by paying tribute to freedom fighters and the Indian Constitution, calling it a “lighthouse” guiding the nation. He expressed condolences to victims of recent natural disasters and pledged continued support for relief efforts.
The event featured a flag hoisting ceremony, a flypast by Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters, and the presence of 5,000 special guests, including athletes, tribal representatives, and sanitation workers.
Call for Unity and Prosperity
Concluding his speech, Modi urged citizens to join in building a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047.
“This is a festival of 140 crore resolutions. Let us work together to build a prosperous, self-reliant India,” he said.
Political Reactions
Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the speech as a “roadmap for progress”, while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described it as a “powerful message of Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance)”.
Opposition leaders, however, voiced concerns about the direction of the government’s policies.
As India celebrates its 79th year of independence, Modi’s speech set a bold and resolute tone, combining policy announcements with a vision for a stronger, self-reliant nation ready to meet global challenges.
