A Tale of Unselfishness on KBC
Kaun Banega Crorepati is one of the biggest game shows in India and has always been a hot platform where knowledge meets entertainment. But one particular episode left a deep impression on me.
The contestant, Neeraj Saxena, was a self-effacing scientist and university vice-chancellor who had reached the hot seat after brilliant performances. He was silent, composed, and an intelligent man. As the round progressed, he replied graciously. He bagged a huge amount of money. But he decided upon something that surprised everyone.
During the break, Neeraj declared, “Sir, I want to quit the game.”. A stunned Amitabh asked, “Are you sure? You’re playing so well. You could easily win crores.” Neeraj calmly replied, “There are many other players waiting for their turn, and they’re younger than me. They should get a chance too. I have already won a lot of money, and I think that what I have is enough.”
It was such a selfless act that everyone remained silent. The audience applauded. Amitabh Bachchan, who was there, appreciated the decision taken by Neeraj. It was rare to see such humility and generosity on national television.
It was a good time when the world in general preferred to keep adding wealth and material things more than human relationships. His actions reminded us of the aspect of giving back to help others. He showed all of us that happiness could be obtained by contentment and compassion, not mere accumulation of wealth.
This episode also highlighted the influence of role models. Neeraj inspired thousands of others to review their priorities and values. He proved that small deeds can create such a wave as well.
I remember after his departure a girl took the hot seat – who had seen pathetic lives with her family; what mattered most was a couple of crores she had desperately needed to raise as cash. Neeraj left that chance, because she got it thereafter.
This experience taught me that one should also give back to society. Sometimes we get so caught up in our own lives that we forget about the struggles of others. But Neeraj’s example reminds us of the fact that everybody can make a difference.
I shall never forget that episode of KBC. That one made me learn an essential lesson about humility, magnanimity, and empathy and inspired me to strive towards being a more selfless person.
