As we celebrate World Students’ Day on October 15, it is fitting to honor one of India’s most beloved figures, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a true inspiration for students across the globe. Known as the “Missile Man of India” for his pivotal role in India’s space and defense programs, Dr. Kalam was much more than a scientist. He was a visionary leader, an educator, and a guiding light for the youth.
Early Life and Education
Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam came from a humble background. His father, Jainulabdeen, was a boat owner, and his mother, Ashiamma, a homemaker. Despite financial hardships, Kalam’s parents valued education, a principle that he carried with him throughout his life.
Dr. Kalam pursued a degree in physics from St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, and later specialized in aerospace engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology. His dedication to learning and his hard work paved the way for his remarkable contributions to science and technology.
Contributions to Science and Technology
Dr. Kalam joined the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) where he made groundbreaking contributions. As the project director of India’s first satellite launch vehicle (SLV-III), he played a key role in launching the Rohini satellite in 1980, marking India’s entry into space exploration.
However, it was his work in defense that earned him the title “Missile Man of India.” He was instrumental in the development of ballistic missile technology, leading to the successful deployment of the Agni and Prithvi missiles. Dr. Kalam also played a pivotal role in India’s nuclear tests in 1998, cementing India’s status as a nuclear power.
President of India: 2002-2007
In 2002, Dr. Kalam was elected as the 11th President of India. His presidency was marked by humility, simplicity, and a strong connection with the people, especially the youth. He was often called the “People’s President” due to his accessibility and efforts to engage with students and citizens alike. During his presidency, he championed the cause of education, innovation, and nation-building, encouraging the youth to dream big and work hard to realize their potential.
Legacy as a Teacher
Despite his numerous accolades, Dr. Kalam always considered himself first and foremost a teacher. His interaction with students was not limited to speeches; he consistently visited schools and colleges, where he inspired young minds to strive for excellence. His mantra, “Dream, dream, dream. Dreams transform into thoughts, and thoughts result in action,” continues to resonate with students even today.
On July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, Dr. Kalam collapsed and passed away, leaving behind a legacy that still inspires millions of people around the world.
