Ruma Devi’s Inspiring Journey From Rags To Riches

0 0

Ruma Devi is a very outstanding woman from Barmer, Rajasthan, India. In this place, determination and passion can shine bright over adversity in life. She was born in the year 1988 and dropped out of school after finishing the 8th grade due to financial constraints as well as societal expectations.
She found out her talent in embroidery at a young age, from her grandmother. Ruma was married at the age of 17. Soon after marriage, she was blessed with a child and then she faced much stress because of her mothers’ condition. She was still not willing to give up but help others despite so many difficulties.
In 2006, Ruma started a self-help group of 10 women from her village who each contributed Rs 100. Together, they purchased a second-hand sewing machine, cloth, threads, and plastic wrappers to make cushions and bags. They sold their products locally and gradually expanded with unflinching dedication.
Soon, Ruma’s initiatives in entrepreneurship and leadership brought widespread recognition. She was a founder of the NGO Gramin Vikas Evam Chetna Sansthan (GVCS) focused on rural women in terms of traditional crafts for their skill development. Her training under her leadership successfully coached over 22,000 women from 75 villages across Rajasthan.
Though her story, through economic empowerment, has much to do with social change, Ruma was always an outspoken voice on the issue of women’s rights and spoke against the ills of female infanticide and domestic violence. Countless women were inspired to break free from their own norms and pursue their aspirations.
The story of Ruma Devi is the best example of human spirit. She has transformed from being a school dropout to a successful social entrepreneur, moving beyond all expectations and emerging as a ray of hope for women at the grassroots level. She has been bestowed with the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar at the national level for her outstanding achievements.
