United Nations: India has supported a United Nations General Assembly resolution which calls for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution has also reiterated the demand of releasing all hostages without any delay or conditions.
A resolution titled “Demand for Ceasefire in Gaza,” introduced by Indonesia on the 10th emergency special session of the UN General Assembly, gained broad support from the body Wednesday before its adoption by the 193-member assembly, calling attention to the dire need for humanitarian consideration of the region.
India voted for the resolution with a continued emphasis on peace and stability in the region. The country has continued to advocate for dialogue and de-escalation in resolving conflicts and reiterated the need to protect civilian lives and ensure humanitarian aid in conflict zones.
The resolution further supports the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, which provides services critical to the existence and life of Palestinian refugees; as Israel has made strides in restricting the operations of this agency.
India’s stand in the UN is reflective of its general foreign policy guidelines that promote multilateralism and peaceful resolution of conflicts. The adoption of this resolution has been regarded as a call by the world for the cessation of hostilities and resumption of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
The action of the UN General Assembly is an expression of the international community’s collective call for immediate measures to alleviate the suffering of civilians caught in the crossfire. However, it remains non-binding and is subject to the cooperation of the concerned parties and support of the international community for implementation.
India’s support for the resolution highlights its commitment to peace and underscores the necessity of ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected populations.
